What is Instore for the future of Lo-Fi Hip Hop? A very new genre as indicated by google trend searches above, Lo-Fi Hip Hop had two pioneers DJ William Berger and J Dilla. In the second lecture of my Future Cultures subject BCM325 we learnt.

“History cannot be imagined without a concept of the past having a future” – Friedrich Nietzsche

Paraphrasing the philosopher, this suggests we can explain the future by what is most powerful in the present. Therefore, to understand the future of Lo-Fi we must understand what elements make it so successful now.

The main element is the fact each track has very little instruments, Lo-Fi Hip Hop thrives on minimalism and there is no doubt Minimalism is the way of the future. whenever we have the release of a new smartphone, the aesthetic being sold is always a simplistic one. Why is this? ever heard the term, less is more?

Natalie Sisson explains this as meaning “having just the essential things is better than having way too much of superfluous things. It allows you to focus on what matters”. So, whenever I see a smartphone ad, the underlying message is: Your future will be simpler, and you will be able to focus on the things that really matter.

The simple Aesthetic behind Lo-fi needs no lyrics, few instruments and it can help you relax, not worry about anything and focus on some stress-free late-night study.
