My New Niche | The Sims 4

From UX Design to the sims 4

My Autoethnographic Investigation

  • Once I had changed my niche to the sims 4, I began by exploring mods.
  • After stumbling across a list exploring the top 10 Sims 4 mods, I followed up by exploring the website.
  • I noticed that mods weren’t exactly created by individual players but groups of players.
  • Sacrificial, Rex, Zero and Basemental were the most common mod creators.
  • I proceeded to visit their websites, where I noticed, each site had its own identity and persona.
  • Although the comments on each mod were very similar – As they were expressing their thoughts of the mods – the simmers downloading the mods were often comparing the mods to packs created by EA.
  • Over the whole board I noticed how much more sims fans appreciated Mods and Custom Content over Sims 4 expansion, game, and stuff packs.
  • Aside from comparisons simmers would ask for modders to update the mods. I later found out the reason for this was, each time the Sims 4 is updated, often mods would no longer work.

I Had 3 key epiphanies, which will directly influence the content I have begun to make and will also influence the content I will make in the future.

My epiphanies

My Digital Artefact

I Had 3 key epiphanies, which will directly influence the content I have begun to make and will also influence the content I will make in the future.

My online persona for my autoethnographic digital artifact is a content creator on Tik Tok, creating content that is centered around custom content and game modifications. I made the decision not to show my face in my content as to not take away from the content itself.

After noticing the sheer popularity of custom content and mods on the sims 4 – where one could argue they are a necessity – I plan to research what this means for the original Sims 4 game as the audience seems to be separating itself from the game.

For the most part, my analytical framework has not changed. I still plan to use Simulation and Modification to form my research. However, the idea of Hardware might change and be replaced My something I find more fitting to my autoethnography.
